🌞 Summer Wellbeing Tips from Care in Hand
As the summer months bring longer days and rising temperatures, it’s essential to be mindful of how warm weather can affect the wellbeing of older adults and vulnerable individuals. At Care in Hand, we understand the challenges caregivers face during heatwaves and hot spells—and we’re here to help.
Whether you’re caring for a loved one at home or supporting someone in the community, these practical tips can help keep them safe, cool, and comfortable throughout the summer season.
1. Hydration is Key
Older adults can be more susceptible to dehydration, especially in the heat. Encourage regular sips of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Flavoured water, herbal teas, and water-rich fruits like watermelon or cucumber can also help.
2. Dress for the Weather
Loose-fitting, breathable clothing in light colours is ideal for staying cool. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses can also help protect from sun exposure when outdoors.
3. Keep the Home Cool
Close blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day and open windows in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler. A fan in a well-ventilated space can also make a big difference. If you have concerns about indoor temperature, speak to your care provider about support.
4. Be Sun-Safe
If your loved one is spending time outside, aim for the shade, especially between 11 am and 3 pm. Always apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply as needed—sunburn can happen quickly and increase health risks.
5. Watch for Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion: excessive sweating, tiredness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. If these occur, move them to a cool place, give them fluids, and seek medical advice if needed.
6. Keep Meals Light
Heavy meals can increase body temperature. Lighter options like salads, cold pasta dishes, and fruit can help maintain energy without adding discomfort.
7. Look Out for Each Other
Check in regularly with elderly neighbours or family members—especially those living alone. Even a quick call can make all the difference in ensuring they’re coping in the heat.
